A Universal Framework for Arranging Music

-Danté D’Angelo, 25 January 2026

 1.  Outline the Form:

  • Which sections of the piece do I want to include, and in what order?

  • How do I want to shape the story my arrangement tells?  (Especially if lyrics or texts are present in the music)

  • This provides overarching context for how elements such as articulations and dynamics may be used later on.

  • Begin determining what feel (grove) the arrangement will have rhythmically, as well as if, when, and how the feel may change throughout the arrangement

2.  Conduct Melodic Dictation for each Section:

  • Beginning with Melodic Dictation allows for flexibility when deciphering harmony and supporting parts

3.  Create Harmonic Progressions for each Section:

  • Create a harmonic progression that works with the melody, without use of harmonic dictation

  • By avoiding harmonic dictation, this allows the arranger’s own harmonic style to take form and allows the arrangement to stand out from the original

  • If the arrangers harmonic progression is identical or similar to the original work’s harmonic progression, this is absolutely acceptable

4.  Finalize the Form:

  • It is to important to next finalize the form after nailing down the arrangements essentials such as feel, melody, and harmony

  • This ensures supporting parts will have direction as the arranger can write parts to flow into subsequent sections

  • Lastly, this prevents the wasting of time by arranging an entire part of a song, just to scratch that section later on

  • If lyrics/texts are present, check that the story or message are still clear and effective.

5.  Create Supporting Parts:

  • If use of contrapuntal lines is employed, begin by creating these parts

  • This allows homophonic textures to harmonically support both the main melodic idea as well as counter point lines.

6.  Finalize the Arrangement:

  • Determine articulations, dynamics, inflections, and instrument-specific techniques that will enhance the overall effect of each section of the piece.

  • Avoid repetition…as a general rule of thumb, no section of the music should last more than 30 seconds (or be repeated more than twice) without change in melody, harmony, rhythm, texture, dynamics, articulations, or inflections.
